Maple Hill Cemetery
Maple Hill Cemetery is Huntsville Alabama’s largest and oldest cemetery. Although this cemetery was officially founded in 1922, the oldest grave marker is from September 17, 1820. Originally, occupying two acres, this cemetery has grown to close to 100 acres, and contains close to 80,000 graves. This cemetery is still active, so this number will continue to increase over time. This cemetery is an official landmark for the state of Alabama, and is the final resting place of several Alabama Governors, United States Senators and Representatives, and numerous other military figures dating back to the civil war. This has also allowed for a large amount of paranormal activity as well.
There have been multiple accounts of people seeing spirits and apparitions over the years. The most notable haunting is that from the first Mausoleum in Huntsville. This mausoleum was built for Mary Chambers Bibb who died when she was only 19 years old, in 1835. She had just married the son of Alabama’s Governor Thomas Bibb, who is also buried in Maple Hill. Mary was killed when she was accidentally poisoned by her maid who mistook a bottle of poison for her medicine. Mary was entombed in her wedding dress, and sitting in her most beloved rocking chair. To this day, there have been many reports that you can hear her rocking in her chair inside her mausoleum.
