Black Creek Memorial Cemetery

Black Creek Memorial Cemetery in Freeport Florida, was officially established in 1899.  Prior to the official cemetery establishment, there used to be an old church next to the cemetery which was erected in the 1800’s.  This church also had a large bell tower attached to it.  The local legend is that one day during the early 1900’s a young brother and sister were walking home one night, and took a detour through the cemetery.  While walking through the cemetery they ran into a bear, which proceeded to chase them into the church bell tower.  The bear followed them in and killed them both.  The legend then continues that at midnight you could hear within the church bell tower a young boy and girl screaming and the sounds of a growling bear.  The unfortunate circumstance with this haunting case, is that the old church has since been torn down and the bell tower is no longer there either.  The same location is now home to Black Creek United Methodist Church and there are no longer reports of this phenomenon occurring.
